Der Schneider von Ulm unternahm 1810 erste Gleitflüge mit seinem selbstkonstruierten Fluggleiter (90 Jahre vor Otto Lilienthal). Beim Versuch, die Donau zu überfliegen, scheiterte er 1811 wegen der fehlenden Thermik und wurde somit zum Gespött seiner Landsleute. Eine Nachbildung des Fluggleiters ist im Ulmer Rathaus zu besichtigen.

In 1810 the Tailor of Ulm made successful gliding flights with a flying device designed and constructed by himself (90 years before Otto Lilienthal). When forced to demonstrate his glider by flying across the Danube in 1811 he failed because of the lack of thermal updrafts and thus became the laughing stock of the city. A replica of the glider is visible inside the Ulm Town Hall.
