Die Gemeine Strandkrabbe (Carcinus maenas), auch einfach Strandkrabbe genannt, ist eine sehr häufige Krabbenart an gemäßigten und subtropischen Küsten. Strandkrabben haben die typischen äußeren Merkmale einer Krabbe. Das den gesamten Körper umgebende Exoskelett bildet einen harten Panzer und macht nahezu 40 Prozent der Körpermasse der Tiere aus. Der einteilige Rückenschild (Carapax) weist bei männlichen Tieren einen Durchmesser von bis zu 86 mm, bei weiblichen bis zu 70 mm auf.

Carcinus maenas is a common littoral crab. It is known by different names around the world. In the British Isles, it is generally referred to as the shore crab, or green shore crab. Carcinus maenas have the typical features of a crab, the exoscelton encloses the whold body with a hard shell and constitute to 40 percent of its mass. C. maenas has a carapace up to 86 millimetres for males and 70mm for females.
